Opposites Attract: The Beauty of Modesty in an Immodest Society

In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
In this society, there is none who suffers more from degredation, belittlement, the lack of self-value, and the perceived lack of value than WOMEN. Yet, Women are the MOST important people in ANY society. From the womb of woman, New societies are birthed or old societies are continued. Therefore, Women have an immeasurable value in the sight of God! Jesus, came from the womb of a woman. The woman is the tool that Almighty God uses to bring into existence PERFECTION. YES, WOMAN. YES, YOU! And it is in this light, that I, Salih Muhammad, felt the need to have a guest blog by a Woman. This blog is intended to inspire any who read. Enjoy!

A guest Blog By Sister Akilah Muhammad...

“A Muslim woman attracts without attracting indecent attention. She is admired for her dignity, honor, cleanliness and righteousness”- The Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad.

“I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was a robe and a diadem.” Job 29:14

The law of electromagnetism states that Electric charges attract or repel one another with a force inversely proportional to the square of the distance between them: unlike charges attract, like ones repel. Magnetic poles (or states of polarization at individual points) attract or repel one another in a similar way and always come in pairs: every north pole is yoked to a south pole.

Webster defines Beauty as “1: the quality or aggregate of qualities in a person or thing that gives pleasure to the senses or pleasurably exalts the mind or spirit. 3: a particularly graceful, ornamental, or excellent quality. 4: a brilliant, extreme, or egregious example or instance.”

Modesty is defined as “1a: Placing a moderate estimate on one’s abilities or worth. 1b: neither bold nor self-assertive: tending toward diffidence. 2: arising from or characteristic of a modest nature 3: observing the proprieties of dress and behavior (decent)”.

Immodest is defined as “not modest: not conforming to the sexual mores of a particular time or place.”
Mores is “the fixed morally binding customs of a particular group; moral attitudes.”

In a world that holds “Barbies” and “Bad Chicks” in high esteem, I tend to stand out amongst my peers wearing a drape scarf as a head covering and a garment in which I consciously make sure covers my entire form. I bear witness to the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad when he says, Islam dignifies the black man and woman “and gives us the desire to be clean internally and externally and for the first time have a sense of dignity.” The beauty of modesty in an immodest society is the REAL love and admiration that is gained for the God within that individual. The gospel duo, Mary Mary, has a song on the radio entitled, “God in Me”, where they describe that the glow people see on their face is manifesting from the God within! The strength that people admire in them is from the God within! The love they exude onto others is from the God within! It is beautiful that this song is in rotation today for “Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised” Proverbs 31:30.

However, this society, orchestrated by the enemies of Allah (God), would have you to believe through radio, television, film, and corrupt educational systems, that being attractive depends on shallow/surface attributes. If you have the “right” figure, facial features, hair, accessories, clothes (or lack thereof), or God Forbid ALL OF THE ABOVE then you are the definition of beautiful and should put this beauty on display for all the world to see. But who are they to say what’s the “right” ANYTHING?! We cannot allow this world to choose which styles or behaviors are attractive, unless we be tricked; let us not be bamboozled today! When we put our beautiful forms and “assets” on display do we understand that we are actually agitating the lower urges within men? In Minister Ava Muhammad’s book, A New Unit of Measurement, she explains that “Men then use this agitation as an excuse for exploitation, abuse, and plain disrespect.” We must realize and remember that we are Royalty! A Queen is never seen disrobed in public; she is always modest in dress and her behavior is of the most refined. She is the standard, an example of the highest form of civilization and is attractive to all in her presence because of her inner modesty that is reflected on the surface. Once we gain a profound understanding of the value of woman, her womb, and what the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad meant when he said “A Nation Can Rise No Higher Than its Woman” then we will grow to know and understand the mindset of a woman like Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She was a chaste woman of God who all men admire and all women should study.
I will give a testimony to the beauty of modesty in an immodest society. Because I choose to cover myself in a fashionable manner at Howard University and everywhere I go, I receive nothing but respect from all who I encounter. I rarely have to open my own door, and I am always complimented on how refreshing it is to see a young lady taking a stand against the trends of today by being my own righteous self. Please do not think I am using this article to boast, I am simply bearing witness to the brilliance of the teachings of the Most Honorable Elijah Muhammad in his instructions that women of God should act and dress according to our title.

“So why does it seem like men are more attracted to women who are less modest?” you may ask. I will ask you, “What kind of ‘men’ are they?! Are they ‘men’ at all?” We must realize that it is Gods light and power within modest sisters and brothers as well that act as a magnet and attractive force in such a corrupt and immodest society where the masses are used to being fed filth (mentally, spiritually, and physically) on a daily bases. Have you ever considered that the attraction that you perceive is actually just a lustful desire! In the same book Sister Ava says “Men have no respect or honor for women who display themselves, even if they are sexually aroused by such displays; they withdraw from their role as provider and protector, question whether their children really belong to them, abandon their families, and in doing so create more poor, homeless, vulnerable people for society to take care of.” Is this the type of attraction a Queen seeks? Emphatically no! Let us do opposite of what this world promotes and seek to attain true beauty by submitting ourselves to the Creator of attraction and all things beautiful, Allah (God). Let us be a magnetic force today with the spirit of truth! Let us attract with our minds and spirit and become the standard of modesty for all the world to behold. Let us wrap ourselves in clothe like the gifts we are; for we are Gods greatest treasures. Let us be Gods definition of “Attractive.”

This is such a beautifully written article! I have learned a different way of addressing young women about being modest in an immodest world, starting with my beautiful granddaughters. It is tough on you girls today because of peer pressure. I can relate to what our sister is saying about the response she receives when she is out in public dressed modestly. It makes one realize that we, the woman has the ability to help the man rise above that lustful nature and demand respect without saying a word! Beautiful! APIDTA! I thank you for this article. Peace and Blessings

Appreciated! Women should place more value on themselves than just an object to be used and abused. And yes women, we use and abuse ourselves by allowing others to. Nice article.
